Introduction

Defiance College Biology is a study of organisms, from single-celled forms to ecological interactions. Students explore areas that include genetics, evolution, ecology, and focused fields such as botany, entomology, ornithology, and herpetology. The program offers a general biology major with options that range from environmental biology to human biology, a molecular biology major focused on chemistry and physics, and a restoration ecology major focused on ecosystem damage and repair.

Students can also choose a field biology focus for field work. All science majors have access to a dedicated computer study area, the 250 acre Thoreau Wildlife Sanctuary, free travel to scientific conferences through the Mikula-Frey travel endowment, and one-on-one training in laboratory techniques and instrumentation. Learning outcomes include applying the scientific method, synthesizing findings from published literature with citations, and evaluating biology concepts across multiple levels.
