Introduction

Communications and Media Studies at Hampshire College uses critical and theoretical approaches to studying diverse media streams, including television, video, film, radio, print, sound, new media, and the Internet, across local, national, and global circulation. The program examines the relationship between media institutions, texts, and audiences, treating media as technologies and symbolic systems that help produce categories such as race, class, gender, ethnicity, and sexuality.

Course learning includes work in media labs and collaborative production spaces, including a media makers lab with production, postproduction, screening, green screen, an in-house lighting grid, a television studio and control room, and editing stations. In the sample first-year course, students study media industry sectors such as journalism, motion pictures, book publishing, and popular music, then write several short papers, complete a longer final paper, and make oral presentations.
