Introduction

The Computer Science curriculum at Hampshire College provides a foundation in programming and digital media, including computer graphics, animation, and game development. It also emphasizes understanding computers, networks, and digital media as tools for learning and creativity, and as catalysts of intended and unintended social transformation. Students may research the potential and limitations of artificial intelligence and its relationship to biological intelligence.
Course work includes limits of computation from philosophical, logical, mathematical, and public policy perspectives. A sample first-year course, What Computers Can't Do, covers claims about artificial intelligence, critiques from philosophy, fundamental logic and mathematics of computation, and social and political questions. Students are evaluated through short papers and problem sets, along with a final project. Facilities include the Hampshire College Cluster Computing Facility and multiple computer and media labs.
