Film and Media Studies Concentration
Introduction
Film and Media Studies Concentration is a program taught at Kalamazoo College, USA. The program is offered in campus-based modes with full-time options.
The Film and Media Studies Concentration helps students explore how mainstream and oppositional creative works engage audiences and shape broader culture. Students analyze films’ aesthetic craftsmanship and the history in which they were made, including ethics, politics, and economics through portrayals of race, gender, and class.
Students build skills through courses in the history, theory, and criticism of domestic and international film, including Classical Hollywood, Manga/Anime and Gender in Modern Japan, and Advanced Film Theory. They also take applied courses in creating film and media, including TV Studio Production, Documentary Video Production, and Lighting Design. The program supports interdisciplinary study across English, philosophy, religion, music, art and art history, theatre, and language departments, and includes a Senior Integrated Project (SIP) capstone.
