Introduction

Interior Design is a program taught at Saddleback College, USA. The program is offered in campus-based modes with full-time options.

The Interior Design Associate in Science (A.S.) degree at Saddleback College prepares students for careers in interior design. Students study design and color theories, history of interior architecture and furnishings, space planning, lighting, materials and products, building systems and codes, and the design process. They also learn manual and computer-aided design and visual communication.

The program is a stackable sequence of awards and requires completion of the Level II certificate program plus Saddleback College general education requirements. It is described as a high unit major due to industry requirements for employment, and the combination of major units and general education may take longer than two years to complete.

Graduates are prepared for entry-level roles such as design assistant for residential and model home designers, color or lighting consultant, CADD specialist, 3D renderer, e-designer, design journalist, space planner, or interior design positions within a larger design team. The degree supports eligibility to sit for the Interior Design Certification Exam (IDEX) through the California Council for Interior Design Certification (CCIDC), the first step toward becoming a Certified Interior Designer (CID).
