Introduction

Photography is a Bachelor program taught at Spelman College, USA. Intake: Fall, Spring. The program is offered in campus-based modes with full-time (4 years) options.

The Photography Major at Spelman College develops students’ critical understanding of how photographic practices shape and reflect the world. Students study photography as a contemporary cultural commodity and as an artistic medium, and they explore the ethics of image capturing and manipulation. The major also includes work with image archives to understand photography’s history, storytelling, and historical impact.

Students produce photographic images while thinking critically about visual culture. The curriculum includes courses in documentary and fictive narratives, studio production, and innovation in photography through technology. Off-campus photography exhibitions in museums, galleries, and site-specific venues, along with on-campus guest lectures by distinguished photographers, support engagement with the field. Students also complete AVC 442 Internship and AVC 492 Portfolio Criticism I and AVC 492A Portfolio Criticism II.
