Introduction

Family Health Nursing at Binghamton University is offered as an Advanced Certificate and as a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) with family health (primary care) specialization. In the family health specialty, DNP students may select a functional role as a nurse practitioner.

The DNP prepares nurses to respond to changes in healthcare delivery and emerging healthcare needs, with a focus on providing leadership for evidence-based practice.

A Post-Graduate Certificate Nurse Practitioner program is also offered for nurses with a DNP who want advanced clinical preparation as a nurse practitioner or clinical nurse specialist in the family nursing clinical specialty.

Decker College is located on the Health Sciences Campus. Advanced-practice graduate nursing students use the Innovative Simulation and Practice Center, accredited by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare, for regularly scheduled clinical activities that assess and manage common healthcare disorders using standardized patients.

Students also work with the Kresge Center for Nursing Research for hands-on learning across phases of the research process under the supervision of nursing scientists.

DNP curriculum includes information technology, patient care, and healthcare policy for healthcare advocacy, and students complete a DNP Scholarly Project with planning, implementation, and evaluation components.
