Introduction

French is a Bachelor program taught at State University of New York at Binghamton, USA. Intake: Fall, Spring. The program is offered in campus-based modes with full-time (4 years) options.

The French program at Binghamton offers a French major with two areas of study: French and Francophone Studies, and French Language and Linguistics. As students progress, they begin specializing in either French, Francophone studies, or linguistics through strategic course selections. Students also typically choose to double major in a different discipline to build a degree plan.

Students may take part in departmental research opportunities, including teaching assistantships, internships as events coordinators, and developing and writing a senior thesis under a professor’s guidance. The Undergraduate Teaching Assistant program places majors in front of the classroom for hands-on experience in teaching and communication. The program supports applications to teach abroad for a year, and students may study abroad, including a faculty-led program in Quebec.

Graduates use the major’s foundation in language skills alongside written and oral communication, analytical and critical-thinking skills, and intercultural competence. Employment areas include teaching, translation and interpretation, writing, international aid and development, foreign diplomatic service, editing and publishing, natural language processing, and ESL. Graduates also pursue graduate degrees including the MBA, Master of Public Administration, Master of French, and Master of Teaching.
