Media Studies
Introduction
Media Studies is a Bachelor program taught at Vassar College, USA. The program is offered in campus-based modes with full-time options.
The Media Studies Program at Vassar College focuses on the critical evaluation of new and old media technologies and on how media matter in global and local culture, social life, politics, and economics. The program defines media broadly, including oral and aural, written, and visual representational media, mass media such as print, television, radio, and film, and new media such as digital multimedia, the Internet, and networked media.
Study uses multidisciplinary approaches from the arts, humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. It includes historical study of communication and the representation of knowledge, theoretical and critical investigation of how media shape understandings of reality, and the interrelationship of media industries, cultural texts, communications technologies, policies, and publics. Students also examine global, non-Western, indigenous, and oppositional media forms and practices, along with practical work in media production and the use of media technologies.
