Overview

OBEL Award Teaching Fellowships provide funding so that universities can incorporate new voices and develop courses connected to the OBEL focus “Ready Made” within the built environment. OBEL will grant two teaching fellowships of up to €75,000 and invite prospective fellows to apply in partnership with a host institution.

The fellowship aims to support deeper exploration, development, and dissemination of knowledge on “Ready Made” and to encourage curiosity in students about major issues facing architecture reflected in OBEL Award themes. The program seeks to help institutions create relevant content and pedagogies and provide opportunities for academic institutions to explore new themes and include new voices on their faculty.

Selection is decided by a committee formed by the Henrik F. Obel Foundation with specialists and academics. Decision-making is based on the proposed fellow’s expertise and professional experience, the promise of impact of the course(s) for students and broader community, relevance to “Ready Made,” clarity of learning objectives and strategies, positive impact beyond subjects, and a budget that outlines reasonable and effective spending during the fellowship period.

Eligibility

  • Prospective fellows must apply in partnership with a host institution.
  • The taught courses should preferably begin soon thereafter and revolve around the “Ready Made” focus.
  • Ideally, the potential fellow should lead/teach two courses within the fellowship period in accredited university programs.
  • Other models may be eligible, including where only one intensive subject is taught.
  • The program describes an opportunity for professionals with at least five years’ experience to take time off from regular duties to teach and share their knowledge through course(s) they have developed.
  • Universities and fellows agree to hand in a copy of the course syllabus and a brief report after the fellowship.
  • Teaching fellows are expected to remain in the city/region of the university or academic institution for the duration of the course(s), not fly in and out for classes.
  • Funds are not to be used for student trips, student stipends, or promotional publications.
  • Fellowships are not intended as a source of funding for current scholars/academics.

Benefits

  • Grant funding: two teaching fellowships of up to €75,000.
  • Funds are intended to be administered by the host institution under a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) or, where required by local customs and legal parameters, through an alternative disbursal manner.

How to apply

  1. Applications are closed for the fellowship cycle.
  2. Prospective fellows should apply in partnership with a host institution.

Documents required

  • Universities and fellows agree to hand in a brief report including the number of students who attended the course; an assessment of the successes and weaknesses of the course; course content and suggestions for modification; pedagogical method; learning outcomes and impacts; and whether/how the course may be continued or included within other courses.
  • The final report of the fellow, including the curriculum of the course, will form part of a library.
  • Fellows are expected to document the fellowship in a visual way so that it can be shared for broader impact and shared on OBEL’s channels.
