Table of Contents

The Graduate School of University of the West of England offers a fully  funded PhD studentship with an industrial placement and enhanced  stipend for UK/EU and International Students in UK.  This Fluorescence Sensing Scholarship is provided in the field of the  development of fluorescence sensing for monitoring microbial processes of  freshwater systems. Applicants should have, or expect to obtain, a first class  or good 2:1 honours degree, or a distinction or high merit at MSc level (or  international equivalent) in an area of Environmental Chemistry/ Environmental  Microbiology and/ or Bio-Geochemistry.

Study Subject(s): Scholarships are offered  to make a key contribution to further the understanding of how fundamental  biogeochemical processes that occur in freshwater systems relate to observed  optical properties. In particular, focus will be on improving our understanding  of how the fluorescent properties of dissolved organic matter in freshwater  systems relate to important microbial processes. Course  Level: This Fluorescence Sensing Scholarship is  available for pursuing PhD degree level at University of the West of  England in UK. Scholarship Provider: The Graduate School of  University of the West of England in UK Scholarship can be taken at:  UK

Eligibility: Applicants should have, or expect to obtain, a  first class or good 2:1 honours degree, or a distinction or high merit at MSc  level (or international equivalent) in an area of Environmental Chemistry/  Environmental Microbiology and/ or Bio-Geochemistry. Applicants should  preferably be able to demonstrate an interest in optical techniques and/or  optical methods, and should have excellent written and oral presentation skills.  The candidate should understand that the PhD programme will be interdisciplinary  and will require the ability to develop knowledge and practical skills in a  number of key areas (sensor development/ applied physics, microbiology and  environmental chemistry). Importantly, the successful applicant will be able to  apply knowledge and skills that will be developed in these areas to practical  applications.

Scholarship Open for International Students:UK/EU  and international students can apply for this scholarship.

Scholarship Description: This studentship will be supervised  by Professor Darren Reynolds (UWE, Bristol) and co-supervised by Dr  Alexandre  Anesio (Bristol Glaciology Centre, University of Bristol), Dr  John Attridge (Chelsea Technologies Group) and Dr Tim Cox (Institute for  Bio-sensing Technology, UWE, Bristol).  This is an extraordinary  opportunity to make a key contribution to further the understanding of how  fundamental biogeochemical processes that occur in freshwater systems relate to  observed optical properties. In particular, focus will be on improving our  understanding of how the fluorescent properties of dissolved organic matter in  freshwater systems relate to important microbial processes. In this studentship,  the successful candidate will help inform the design, fabrication, validation  and testing of a fluorescence sensor in partnership with Chelsea Technologies  Group (the industrial partner).

Number of award(s):Not Known

Duration of award(s): Scholarship is offered for  three years. Successful candidates will spend 9 months working with the  industrial partner in their commercial environment (3 x three month  periods).
