Friedrich Ebert Foundation - Scholarship for International Students

The Friedrich Ebert Foundation Scholarship for International Students is funded by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation (Studienförderung). The programme provides material and non-material support so that sponsored students have no financial worries during their studies and have more time for volunteering.

Applicants come from countries in the Global South (Asia, Africa, Latin America), post-Soviet states, and eastern and south-eastern European (EU) countries. Students in any subject area are eligible to apply, if they demonstrate excellent academic merit, already study in Germany, and are committed to the values of social democracy and live by them.

Selection is described in terms of academic and personal criteria: outstanding academic merit with first graded certificates of academic achievement, and social and political involvement with commitment to the values of social democracy. Enrolment is required at a state or state-recognised higher education institution in Germany.

Maximum funding lasts for the duration corresponding to BAföG regulations. The scholarship includes a monthly base amount of 992 EUR, with health insurance costs funded, and additional allowances for scholars with a child. The scholarship does not have to be repaid.

• Applicants must have above-average study-related performance and first graded certificates of academic achievement.
• Applicants must show social and political involvement and commitment to the values of social democracy.
• Applicants must have sufficient knowledge of German even if courses are held in English. This means: a Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang of at least DSH level 2, or a Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache of at least level 4, or a Zertifikat C1 by a Goethe Institute, or the Deutsche Sprachdiplom der Kultusministerkonferenz on level II, or telc C1 Hochschule.
• Students or doctoral candidates from OECD countries are not eligible for funding.

• Monthly base amount: 992 EUR.
• Health insurance costs are funded.
• Scholars with a child can receive additional allowances.
• No repayment is required.
