Heidelberg University Amirana Scholarship

The Amirana Scholarship is a funding program at Heidelberg University for international medical and dental students from low and middle income countries of the Global South. It supports students who suddenly experience financial difficulties due to circumstances beyond their control or who need special support in the final phase of their studies.

Applicants must be studying dentistry or medicine at Heidelberg University at the study locations Heidelberg and Mannheim. The funding is available to students from low and middle income countries of the Global South who are in temporary financial need or require support in the final phase of their studies and who are not educational residents, using the current DAC List for country categorisation.

Selection is based on whether the student’s situation is recognised as sudden financial distress through no fault of their own, and whether the student can only continue or successfully complete studies with temporary financial assistance. Applicants must read the linked document “Financial distress” to see if their situation is recognised as sudden distress.

The scholarship can only cover short periods of financial hardship (usually up to one year) and cannot cover the whole study programme. Re-application is only possible if a new special hardship has arisen or if the student is in the final phase of studies and needs a grant to successfully complete, for example by reducing working hours to cover living expenses.
