Doctor of Philosophy Phd

The Doctor of Philosophy in Theology program offers advanced academic study in theology and Christian ministry with a focus on African religious and cultural contexts. It includes limited classroom coursework in research methods and requires seminar paper presentations, comprehensive exams, and a doctoral thesis. Students develop thesis proposals relevant to Christian experiences and theology in Africa and the African Diaspora. The program is designed for those intending to teach theology and ministry at tertiary levels and to contribute to church leadership and theological scholarship.

Modules

• Systematic Theology including Christian Theology in Africa
• Biblical Studies: Old and New Testaments
• Church History and Christian Missions
• Practical Theology: Pastoral Care and Counseling; Christian Education

• A First Degree with a grade point average of at least 3.25 on a 4.0 scale on each transcript submitted
• For applicants without a first degree in religion/theology, a Master of Arts degree in those fields would be accepted instead
• A Master of Theology or Master of Philosophy Researched Degree in the Study of Religion or Theology, including at least one academic year of coursework and a second academic year of thesis writing
• The thesis for the MTh and MPhil must be at least 30,000 words and externally examined
• Two academic recommendations, one from an academic supervisor and one from a church leader of high status
• Application fee payment
• A one-page statement of reasons for pursuing the PhD program and a statement of Christian background
• Submission of original MTh or MPhil thesis
• Interview by a panel
