This scholarship program aims to provide master’s degree scholarships to educators and professionals who show the potential to make a significant impact on English language teaching and learning in their h ome countries.

The University of Exeter, a prestigious public research institution located in the Southwest of England with campuses in Exeter and Cornwall, offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs in various fields, including business, law, humanities, social sciences, sciences, and engineering. Established in 1955, it is renowned both nationally and internationally.

Degree Level:

The degree level specified is “Master’s degree.”

The course level, “Master’s degree in TESOL,” indicates that the scholarship is for individuals pursuing a postgraduate program focused on teaching English to non-native speakers.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Eligible Countries: Residents of and workers in low or middle-income countries as per the OECD DAC list.
  • Acceptable Course or Subjects: Any subject offered by the University of Exeter under the MEd TESOL program.
  • Admissible Criteria: Applicants must have a minimum of three years’ full-time TESOL teaching or related professional experience after their first degree. They should also hold an undergraduate degree or relevant postgraduate degree.
  • Nationals of and working in low and middle-income countries as defined by the OECD DAC list.

Scholarship Benefits:

  • Full Fee Waiver: The scholarship covers the entire tuition fees for the course.
  • Stipend for Living Costs: Recipients receive a stipend of at least £15,500 to cover accommodation and living expenses.
  • International Travel Costs: The scholarship includes coverage for return international travel expenses, which covers one journey to the UK at the beginning of the course and one journey back to the home country at the end of the course.

How to Apply:

  1. Start with University Application: Begin by completing the University of Exeter’s application for admission to the MEd TESOL (Master of Education in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) program.
  2. Obtain Exeter Student Number: Once you have applied to the university, you’ll receive a unique Exeter student number as part of your admission process.
  3. Complete Hornby Scholarship Application: With your Exeter student number in hand, proceed to complete the Hornby Scholarship application form. This application will require the following:
    • A covering letter that addresses the key challenges faced by English language teachers.
    • Explain how pursuing the MEd TESOL program at the University of Exeter will help address these challenges.
    • Discuss your suitability for the Hornby Scholarship.
  4. Submit Your Application: Ensure that you have filled out all the required information accurately and submit your Hornby Scholarship application by the specified deadline.
