Hungarian State Scholarships for International Students

Tempus Public Foundation offers Hungarian state scholarships for foreign higher education students, graduates, lecturers and researchers who would like to gain further knowledge and experience in Hungarian higher education institutions, research or art institutes.

Four types of scholarships are available in the academic year: partial/semester studies; full Bachelor/Master/Doctoral programmes; short or long-term study visits; and summer courses. Applicants for partial/semester bachelor, master and doctoral studies can apply for programmes held in Hungarian or English, while applicants for full degree bachelor, master and doctoral studies can apply only for programmes held in Hungarian language (except for art studies, where studies in English is possible).

Eligibility depends on the applicant’s citizenship/relations with a valid educational work plan or a bilateral agreement signed by the Hungarian Government or the Ministry of Human Capacities and the relevant ministry of the given country or territory. Eligibility lists differ by scholarship type, including separate lists for full degree studies, partial studies, study visits, and summer courses.

• Applicant must be a foreign higher education student, graduate, lecturer, or researcher.
• Applicant must be a citizen of relations that have a valid educational work plan or a bilateral agreement signed by the Hungarian Government or the Ministry of Human Capacities and the relevant ministry of the given country or territory.
• For all types of state scholarships, applicants must be over 18 at the time of submitting the application.
• Partial/semester bachelor/master/doctoral studies: applications available for programmes held in Hungarian or English language.
• Full degree bachelor/master/doctoral studies: applications available only for programmes held in Hungarian language; except for art studies where studies in English is possible.
• Non-eligibility: foreign citizens with an immigration/settlement permit in Hungary, or in the course of applying for such a permit in Hungary.
• Non-eligibility: dual (Hungarian-Foreign) citizens.
• Non-eligibility: foreign citizens with permanent residence in Hungary.
• Non-eligibility: foreign citizens employed as defined by the Hungarian Labour Law.

• Tuition fee is covered by the Hungarian state.

1. Submit an application in the online system of Tempus Public Foundation only.
2. Choose the scholarship type and submit by the corresponding deadline: Semester/partial studies, Full degree studies, Short or long-term study visits (22 February 2024, 11 pm CET); Summer course (28 March 2024, 11 pm CET).
