University of Galway Ireland Hardiman PhD Scholarships

University of Galway’s Hardiman Research Scholarships provide a fully funded Hardiman PhD Scholarship for a structured PhD. The scholarship is funded through the Hardiman Research Scholarships and is described as supporting foundational, curiosity-driven research, expanding understanding, and inspiring innovation.

The scholarships are for students starting their PhD on 1st September and pursuing a structured PhD within University of Galway’s wide range of programmes. Applications must be for full-time structured PhDs in the University of Galway.

Applicants must nominate one supervisor, submit a supervisor form, and submit a complete application. Two academic references indicating suitability and potential to undertake postgraduate research must be received by the deadline. University of Galway assesses applications as part of the scholarship process.

The Hardiman PhD Scholarships provide funding for four years. The scholarship provides a stipend of €25,000 p.a. plus tuition fee coverage for four years, and it does not cover the student levy or provide a budget for consumables or travel.

• Applicant must be a student starting their PhD on 1st September.
• Must pursue a structured PhD at the University of Galway.
• Scholarships will be awarded only to those who are admitted to full-time structured PhDs in the University of Galway.
• Applications accepted in English or Irish.
• Applications will not be accepted from persons currently registered as PhD students.
• Applications will not be accepted from persons who previously were awarded a PhD.
• Not eligible for University of Galway Scholarship opportunities, including Hardiman Scholarships, for a PhD in the Burren College of Art.

1. Read the Applicant's Guide prior to completing the application form.
2. Find a supervisor and nominate one supervisor.
3. Ensure a supervisor form is submitted by the proposed supervisor by 2026-02-06 (17:00 Irish Time).
4. Submit a complete application by 2026-02-06 (17:00 Irish Time).
5. Have two academic references received by 2026-02-06 (17:00 Irish Time).
6. Applications are accepted in English or Irish only.
