Erasmus+ Study grants - Leiden University

Erasmus+ for Studies is a study scholarship offered by Leiden University for students who want to follow part of their Bachelor or Master programme in a European country at a partner university. Leiden University states that it receives grant funding allocated to it by the European Commission, and that grant amounts (total and monthly) can vary each year.

The target group is Bachelor and Master students. The scholarship is for study in Erasmus+ programme countries, which Leiden University lists as all EU member states plus the Republic of North Macedonia, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Serbia and Turkey, and it cannot take place in the Netherlands. Leiden University also lists faculties and areas covered, including Archaeology, Humanities, Medicine/LUMC, Governance and Global Affairs, Law, Social and Behavioural Sciences, Science, ICLON, African Studies Centre, and International Institute for Asian Studies.

Leiden University states that it cannot guarantee that all applicants who meet the eligibility criteria will be awarded a grant. Funds are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, and earlier applications are expected to have a greater chance of being awarded a grant. For the academic year, limited funds mean students receive a grant for a maximum period of 90 days, and additional days receive 0-grant status (including potential top-up grants).

• You must be a registered Bachelor or Master student at Leiden University.
• You must be at least in your second year of studies.
• If you are a PhD candidate: you must have an employment contract with Leiden University as a PhD candidate; otherwise you cannot apply for an Erasmus+ scholarship.
• If you do not have an employment contract with Leiden University as a PhD candidate: you cannot apply for an Erasmus+ scholarship.
• Your study must be a fully recognised part of your Bachelor or Master programme at Leiden University.
• The receiving institution must hold an Erasmus+ inter-institutional agreement with Leiden University.
• You must have an address in The Netherlands at the time of requesting the scholarship.
• You may apply for an Erasmus+ grant totaling up to a maximum of twelve months per study cycle (BA/MA/PhD).
• The duration of your Erasmus+ period must be between 2 months (60 days) and 12 months (360 days).
• A duration of less than 60 days can only be accepted if your host institution uses a system of shorter semesters/trimesters.
• You may apply only once for an Erasmus+ for Studies Grant for the academic year 2026-2027.
• You must study in an Erasmus+ programme country listed by Leiden University (all EU member states plus the Republic of North Macedonia, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Serbia and Turkey).
• Your Erasmus+ period cannot take place in the Netherlands.
• Going to study in the UK: you can unfortunately not apply for Erasmus+ and must apply for a LUSTRA+ scholarship instead.

• Erasmus+ study grant amount calculated based on the exact number of days spent abroad and the destination country.
• Group 1 study destinations: € 390 per month (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Norway, Sweden).
• Group 2 study destinations: € 330 per month (Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, North Macedonia, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Türkiye, plus Switzerland is listed with a restriction).
• For the academic year 2026-2027 with limited funds: a grant for a maximum period of 90 days; additional days receive 0-grant status.
• Obligation during the stay abroad: you must continue to pay the statutory tuition fee to Leiden University.
• Green travel (environmentally friendly/sustainable means for the majority of your travel): higher ‘Green travel’ payment amounts by distance, and you may also receive 2 or 4 days of additional ‘individual support’ to cover travel days.
• Green travel amounts by distance: 10–99 km (€ 56 green / € 28 non-green); 100–499 km (€ 285 green / € 211 non-green); 500–1999 km (€ 417 green / € 309 non-green); 2000–2999 km (€ 535 green / € 395 non-green); 3000–3999 km (€ 785 green / € 580 non-green); 4000–7999 km (€ 1188 green / € 1188 non-green); 8000 km or more (€ 1735 green / € 1735 non-green).
• Inclusion top-up payment for students with a diagnosed medical condition and/or a DUO supplementary grant: € 250 per month.
• Additional conditions for inclusion top-up: if you receive a supplementary grant from DUO or if you have an economic barrier or a diagnosed medical condition, you may be entitled to the inclusion top-up payment of € 250 per month.

1. Go to the Study Abroad Portal and request your Erasmus+ grant for Studies at least two months before the start of your Erasmus+ period.
2. Download and follow the Erasmus+ Checklist of administrative procedures, including the steps needed before, during, and after the stay abroad.
3. If your application is not submitted by the relevant time, Leiden University states that late applications will be denied.
4. While awaiting a decision, create an Online Learning Agreement (OLA) and digitally sign it.
5. Enter contact details of both the sending and receiving institution, then Leiden University states that relevant people at Leiden University and your host institution will digitally sign the OLA and the status will change to ‘signed by both coordinators’.
6. If you have difficulties with your OLA (for example, if your host institution does not use the online tool yet), contact the Scholarships Team via [email protected].
7. If your application is approved, Leiden University states you will receive an email instructing you to log into the Study Abroad Portal and take a number of steps; read and follow the instructions.
8. Leiden University states that your Erasmus+ grant will be transferred to your bank account at least 2 weeks before the start date of your period abroad.

• If you receive a supplementary grant from DUO: an official letter granting these funds (toekenningsbericht).
• If you do not receive a supplementary grant from DUO but you experience an economic barrier: Economical Declaration of Honour signed by both you and a student counsellor, including substantive proof of your situation.
• If you have a diagnosed medical condition: Medical Declaration of Honour signed by both you and a student counsellor specifying the additional costs because of the condition.
