University of Waikato PhD Scholarship

The University of Waikato Doctoral Scholarship is one of the doctoral scholarships considered through the University’s scholarship application process. The page states that applications for doctoral scholarships are considered four times each year and that the scholarships include the University of Waikato Doctoral Scholarship, the University of Waikato Māori Doctoral Scholarship, and the University of Waikato Doctoral Scholarship for Pacific Peoples.

The scholarship application is available through MyWaikato when applying for enrolment. The page states that you can apply for a scholarship from 1 March through MyWaikato, and that scholarship applicants have an opportunity to provide commentary, include academic and professional references, and submit updated materials if they have changed since the application to enrol.

Applications are considered in four rounds each year, and the page states that you require an Offer of Place in order to be considered for a scholarship. The University also states that, after submission of your Application to Enrol, the application is reviewed by the relevant School/Faculty once all requested documentation has been received.

• For PhD or Higher Degree study, you must have completed a Bachelor with Honours or a Masters degree with a significant research component.
• A research component must be a thesis, dissertation, or research project making up at least 25% of one year’s study of your entry qualification.
• Research methods papers are not counted as a research component.
• Masters degrees that do not meet the research component requirements are not qualifying degrees for entry into Higher Research Degree study.
• You must have achieved a minimum of Second Class, First Division, in your qualifying degree.
• If you are an International Student, you will need to meet the University of Waikato English language requirements.
• For scholarship consideration, you require an Offer of Place.
• You must have a University of Waikato Supervisor’s Invitation to Apply for your doctoral application to be considered.

1. Check your eligibility for PhD or Higher Degree study.
2. Find and connect with a research supervisor or project by visiting Staff Profiles and/or the PhD Opportunities page, then email to discuss how your research aligns and obtain agreement from at least one University of Waikato supervisor.
3. Request and receive an Invitation to Apply from your supervisor; if you do not have an Invitation to Apply, your application will not be considered.
4. Prepare your application documents using the application checklist.
5. Submit your Application to Enrol through the MyWaikato Application Portal, uploading documents, providing evidence of your Invitation to Apply, and providing contact details of two referees.
6. Optional: apply for a University of Waikato Doctoral Scholarship through MyWaikato as part of your enrolment application, using the commentary, references, and updated materials options available in MyWaikato.
