Sir Robert and Hilary Burgess Research and Teaching Fund

The University of Leicester School of Education is delighted to be able to offer a new Doctorate in Education (EdD) studentship to both UK/EU and International students, supported by the Sir Robert and Lady Hilary Burgess Research and Teaching Fund.

The Fund will support teaching excellence by providing scholarships to fund a student to study for a Doctorate in Education (EdD). The Fund will enable our leading teachers to improve their practice, develop curricula and improve the quality of education for future generations.

Eligibility

The EdD programme is a part-time professional doctorate programme designed for full-time teachers, senior leaders and other education professionals.

The scholarship is available to suitable UK/EU and International (i.e., outside the EU) applicants.

Entry Requirements for the EdD:

An Honours Degree with a minimum classification of 2.1 or equivalent qualification from a recognised institution*
A Masters degree in a relevant subject*
Sufficient experience to undertake the proposed research – i.e., an appropriate background in research or academic qualifications, professional experience, and supporting references
Standard English language requirements (IELTS with a minimum overall score of 6.5 and a minimum score of 6.0 in each component; or TOEFL internet-based 90/120 minimum)
Under UK immigration laws, student visas are not issued for part-time programmes; international applicants would be expected to remain based in their normal country of residence
Applicants must be able to start in October 2015

Fields of study
Doctoral level research study in Education (EdD). Key features of the programme include:

The possibility of conducting research in the workplace, typically focussing on aspects of teaching, learning and/or leadership;
A structured induction into doctoral research and writing, with four short assignments in the first stage of study;
An intensive induction weekend and an annual summer school;
Opportunities to join a vibrant research community;
The support of two expert supervisors
An emphasis on the development of critical reading, writing and thinking skills, research literacy and methodological understanding

The scholarship which is a fee waiver is payable over five years

Scholarship benefits
The studentship is available for part-time registration and is payable as a UK/EU tuition fee waiver, which covers the part-time fee.

Please note though that the award covers tuition fees at the UK/EU rate only; international applicants (and those not eligible to pay UK/EU tuition fees) must demonstrate at the time of their application that they can fund the difference in tuition fee rates.

To apply, you must draft a research proposal that tells what you want to research, how you intend to do it, and why it is worth doing; and thereafter, prepare your supporting documents.

The studentship will remain open until 1 July 2015 – so early application is strongly encouraged.

PLEASE NOTE:
Applications that do not include a full research proposal and the required supporting documents will not be considered.

In the Fees and Financial Support section of the application, applicants must state that they wish to be considered for the October 2015 Doctor of Education Studentship (Ref. EdD Burgess Studentship).
