Bachelor of Arts Honors in Library and Information Studies

The Open University of Sri Lanka offers the Bachelor of Arts Honors in Library and Information Studies (BA Hons (LIS)) through the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. The programme is focused on managing knowledge resources for access. It covers acquiring information resources, organizing them using methods and existing technology, analyzing resource contents, embedding metadata into bibliographic formats, providing access using technology-based platforms, and preserving materials for future use.

The course aims to develop managerial and administrative competencies to establish, maintain, and run libraries. It also provides technical knowledge and training on information systems, access systems, related software, and emerging technologies. Students build research skills for service development and upgrade professional competencies, while also working toward professional ethics and conduct in the library and information studies field. Delivery is online and physical, and the programme duration depends on entry level.

Level 3 – entry requirements: A/L 03 passes in main subjects in any subject stream.

Level 05 – entry requirements: Candidates must have Diploma (60 credits) Library and Information Science from a recognized Institution or an equivalent or Higher qualification acceptable to the Senate of the Open University.
