Diploma in Plant Breeding

The Diploma in Plant Breeding teaches how plant breeding uses techniques to manipulate plant genetics for better performance. Students learn from lectures and practical work that includes laboratory classes, field visits, and a research project. The course covers approaches from selecting plants with desirable characteristics for propagation to more complex methods such as tissue culture and molecular techniques.

The diploma runs for 01 year. The course design includes 65 hrs of lectures, 201 hrs of laboratory classes, six field visits, and a 450 hrs research project. It is conducted face to face using printed course material. Successful completion requires fulfilling 80% attendance, and a Certificate of Completion is awarded by the Department of Botany, Open University of Sri Lanka.

• Three (03) pass grades at the G.C.E (A/L) in Biological Science, Agricultural Science or Bio-System Technology stream OR
• Obtained a minimum of three (03) C grades from among the Foundation courses in Science offered by the Open University of Sri Lanka, compatible to the subjects mentioned above OR
• An equivalent or a higher qualification acceptable to the Senate of the Open University of Sri Lanka
• At least a C grade for English at the G. C. E (O/L).
