Bachelors in Architecture Programs in the UK: Top 15

Qualifying as an architect in Britain happens in stages, and a bachelor's degree is only the first of them.

The master's and the professional practice stage come afterwards, which means none of the fifteen courses below finishes the job on its own — and one of them is a master's that has found its way onto an undergraduate list.

Out of 63 architecture programmes on record, these are described by length, studio culture, specialism and what admissions will want to see in your portfolio.

How this list is ordered: Ordered by each university's QS World University Rankings position where it has one, then by research citations recorded by OpenAlex; one programme per university, and universities with neither measure are left out.

6 Bachelor Architecture MArch

Northumbria University

  • DeliveryOn campus
  • Study modeFull time
  • Duration2 years
  • StartsFall, Spring
  • Research citations1,475,484

Northumbria's MArch is a master's, which makes it the second stage of qualification rather than the first. It runs two years and is professionally accredited.

Four themes are named. Two are social: regenerating cities, and designing for health and wellbeing. The others are sustainable design and the digital tools the profession now runs on.

Teaching is design-led and built around a hands-on studio with live project work, which is how the gap between a student scheme and a real commission gets closed.

Brighton's four-year BA pays unusual attention to what buildings are made of. Construction, materials and the environmental cost of a building are studied alongside the design.

Studio practice, theory and design experiment are balanced across the course. Students who understand materials make better decisions earlier in a project. Two routes are named: architectural technologist and construction project manager.

University of Wolverhampton

  • DeliveryOn campus

Wolverhampton covers more ground than most three-year degrees. The history of the discipline, the technology of putting a building up, designing it sustainably and planning it into a city are all included.

Planning is the useful addition, since what you are allowed to build usually settles the design before it starts. Studio work takes students from first sketch through to a resolved scheme.

Studying architecture in Britain: stages, portfolios and course lengths

Will a bachelor's degree make me an architect?

No. British architectural qualification is staged, and an undergraduate degree completes only the first stage. A master's follows, then a period in practice with a final professional examination. Northumbria's MArch is that second stage, and it appears here despite being a master's rather than a bachelor's.

Why are some courses three years and others four?

The extra year is not always the same thing. London Metropolitan states that its three-year route includes a foundation year, which teaches drawing and design fundamentals before the degree proper. Coventry, Brighton, Gloucestershire, Bath Spa, University of the Arts London, Glasgow School of Art and Falmouth all run four years, so ask each what the additional year holds.

How important is the portfolio?

It usually decides the application. Coventry asks for A-levels, preferably including art or design, plus a strong portfolio showing both creative and technical ability. London Metropolitan wants a portfolio of creative work and a personal statement showing genuine motivation. Start assembling it long before you apply.

What English scores are published?

Two courses give numbers. Coventry asks for IELTS around 6.0 to 6.5 with a minimum in each band. London Metropolitan asks for at least 6.0 with no band below 5.5. The remaining courses do not state a figure in this listing.

Which course suits someone focused on sustainability?

Glasgow School of Art runs environmental architecture as a full degree, covering ecological conservation, energy efficiency and integration with landscape. Northumbria's master's names sustainable design, health and wellbeing and urban regeneration as its themes. Most of the others teach sustainability inside a general architecture degree rather than as the subject.
