Bachelors in Biology Programs in the USA: Top 20

20 of the 1,138 Bachelor's Biology programmes educads records in the USA, one from each of 20 universities, with the facts we hold for each one.

How this list is ordered: Ordered by each university's QS World University Rankings position where it has one, then by research citations recorded by OpenAlex; one programme per university, and universities with neither measure are left out.

A bachelor's in biology: a wide door, and what it opens onto

Biology is the most-taken science degree in the United States, and that is worth thinking about before you choose it. A great many of the people on a biology course are there because it is the assumed route to medical, dental or veterinary school — not because they intend to be biologists.

That shapes the degree. The first two years are usually fixed and crowded: general biology, general and organic chemistry, physics, calculus or statistics. The subject only really opens up in years three and four, which is where programmes differ from one another and where your choice actually matters.

Three broadly different paths sit under the same title:

  • Pre-professional — built around the prerequisites for medical and related graduate schools.
  • Research track — laboratory work, often with an undergraduate thesis, aimed at a PhD.
  • Applied or organismal — ecology, marine, conservation, field-based, leading to work rather than further study.

A programme can be excellent at one of these and ordinary at another.

What actually separates one biology degree from another

Because the first two years are similar everywhere, the questions that distinguish programmes are about access rather than curriculum:

AskWhy it decides things
Can undergraduates work in a research lab, and from which year? This is the single biggest differentiator. Lab experience is what graduate schools read and what turns a transcript into an application.
Is there a dissertation or capstone? A supervised research project is evidence you can do the work, not just pass exams.
How large are the second-year classes? Organic chemistry and genetics are where people leave the subject. Class size and teaching support in those two courses matter more than the prospectus suggests.
What do graduates do next? Ask for the actual breakdown — graduate school, professional school, employment. A department that tracks it will tell you; one that does not is itself an answer.

If you are aiming at a professional school, check its prerequisite list directly rather than assuming the biology degree covers it. Requirements are set by the receiving school, they differ, and they change. The admissions office of the programme you eventually want is the authority — not the department teaching you now.

Common questions

Is biology the right degree for medical school?

It is the common one, but medical schools do not require it — they require specific prerequisite courses, which many majors can accommodate. Choosing a subject you will do well in matters more than the label, because grades carry weight. Check the prerequisite list of the schools you are aiming at directly.

What can I do with a biology bachelor's without further study?

Laboratory and technician roles, quality and regulatory work, field and environmental positions, science communication and teaching among them. Many biology graduates do go on to further study, so ask each department for its own breakdown of what its graduates actually did.

How important is undergraduate research?

For anyone considering graduate school, very. It is the part of an application that cannot be revised later. Ask when undergraduates can join a lab, how places are allocated, and whether the work is paid or for credit.

Why does this list not show tuition?

A recorded fee exists for only about 2% of the programmes in our database, so a fee column would be blank on most rows. Duration, intake and study mode are shown because those are on the record.

How to use the list above

The order is by the research standing of the university — QS World position where there is one, then OpenAlex citations — one programme per university. For biology this proxy is more meaningful than for most subjects on this site, because research output tracks the size and activity of the labs an undergraduate might actually join.

It still says nothing about whether undergraduates get into those labs. Use the list as a shortlist and ask that question of each department directly.
