Masters in Biology Programs in the USA: Top 20

A biology master's in the United States is the most variable degree on this site. For some people it is a route into a doctorate they could not yet get admitted to; for others it is a qualification for laboratory and agency work; for others again it is a year or two of repair work on an undergraduate record. The twenty programmes below serve all three purposes, and the right question is which one you are doing.

How this list is ordered: Ordered by each university's QS World University Rankings position where it has one, then by research citations recorded by OpenAlex; one programme per university, and universities with neither measure are left out.

2 Masters of Science in Biology

Washington State University at Vancouver

  • DeliveryOn campus
  • Study modeFull time
  • Duration1–2 years
  • StartsFall, Spring
  • Research citations7,838,804

A Master of Science in biology at Washington State University's Vancouver campus.

Branch campuses usually mean smaller groups and closer supervision than the main campus. American biology master's degrees come in two forms: a thesis route for research, and a taught route for employment.

Ecology, genetics, microbiology and cellular biology are all covered, with laboratory experiments and fieldwork attached to each. Deciding early which of the two routes you want saves a wasted semester.

Biology master's degrees in the USA: common questions

Do I need a master's before a biology PhD?

Usually not — American doctoral programmes commonly admit straight from a bachelor's and award a master's along the way. A master's first is worth it if your undergraduate record needs strengthening, if you lack research experience, or if you are changing field. In those cases take a thesis master's, because a coursework one will not serve the purpose.

Thesis or coursework — which should I choose?

Thesis if you are heading for a doctorate or a research post, because the project and the references are the whole point. Coursework if you are heading into industry quality roles, agency work or teaching, because it is faster and more predictable. Most programmes offer both and let you choose after admission, so ask before you accept.

Can I get funding for a master's?

Less reliably than for a doctorate. Teaching assistantships are the most common form, since biology departments need laboratory demonstrators, and they usually carry a tuition waiver and stipend. Ask what proportion of master's students receive one, whether it lasts the full programme, and whether international students are eligible.

How long does it take?

Most records here say one to two years. Two are more candid: one at two to five years, which indicates a part-time structure, and one estimated at 24 months. A thesis track realistically takes longer than a coursework one, because experiments do not run to a timetable.

Can I apply from a non-biology background?

Some programmes admit career changers with prerequisite coursework, and a master's is a recognised route into the field. Ask each department what undergraduate background it expects, whether it will accept prerequisites taken elsewhere, and whether any bridging courses are required in the first year.
