Bachelors in Music Programs in the USA: Top 20

20 of the 880 Bachelor's Music programmes educads records in the USA, one from each of 20 universities, with the facts we hold for each one.

How this list is ordered: Ordered by each university's QS World University Rankings position where it has one, then by research citations recorded by OpenAlex; one programme per university, and universities with neither measure are left out.

A music degree is chosen differently from every other subject here

Most degrees are decided on curriculum and cost. Music is decided on the audition, the teacher, and the building — and on which of two quite different degrees you are actually applying for.

  • Bachelor of Music (BM) — a professional performance or composition degree. The majority of your time is music. Entry is by audition and the audition usually matters more than your academic record.
  • Bachelor of Arts in Music (BA) — music within a liberal arts degree. Broader, less intense, easier to combine with another subject, and often a better fit if you are not certain about a performing career.

Then there are music education, music therapy and music technology, which are different professions wearing the same word. Music education in particular usually carries teacher certification requirements set by a state, which is a separate matter from the music itself and needs checking with that state.

What to ask, and why the usual questions do not help here

Rankings are close to useless for music, because what you are buying is a specific teacher's time and a specific room's acoustics.

AskWhy
Who would I study with, and are they taking students? The studio teacher shapes the degree more than the institution does. A named teacher may be on leave, fully subscribed, or leaving.
How much one-to-one time, and with whom? Weekly hours with the principal teacher, versus with a graduate assistant, differ enormously between schools that look alike on paper.
What ensembles exist and how are places decided? If the orchestra is dominated by graduate students, an undergraduate's playing time can be thin.
Practice rooms and instrument access? Unglamorous and decisive. Ask how many rooms, what hours, and whether access is competitive.
Conservatory or university school of music? A conservatory concentrates on music; a university school lets you take other subjects and change direction. Neither is better — they suit different people.

Visit if you possibly can, and sit in on a lesson. Nothing in a prospectus substitutes for hearing the room.

Common questions

BM or BA in music?

A BM is a professional degree where most of your time is music and entry is by audition. A BA places music inside a liberal arts degree and leaves room for other subjects. If you are certain about performance, the BM; if you want to keep options open, the BA.

Does the ranking of the university matter for music?

Less than in almost any other subject. What matters is the studio teacher, one-to-one time, ensemble access and facilities. A highly ranked university with a thin music faculty can be a worse choice than a less known school with the right teacher.

What about music education?

It is a teaching qualification as much as a music one, and teaching in a public school requires state certification. Ask the programme which state's requirements it is built around and confirm with that state's certification office.

Why does this list not show tuition?

A recorded fee exists for only about 2% of the programmes in our database. For music the question is more complicated anyway, because scholarships are often awarded on audition and can change the real cost substantially — ask about that directly.

How to use the list above

The order is by the research standing of the university — QS World position where there is one, then OpenAlex citations — one programme per university. Be straightforward about what that means here: citation counts measure published research, and a conservatory's strength lies in performance and teaching, which such a measure does not see at all.

So for music this list is a starting set of names, not a ranking of quality. The things that decide a music degree are in the questions above, and they are answered by visiting and asking.
