The Southampton Solent University MSc Sustainable Building Design teaches theory and practical skills for designing, analysing, and assessing the performance of sustainable buildings. Modules cover building information management, performance analysis such as thermal modelling and carbon counting, strategies and assessment across the whole life cycle, and a Sustainable Building Project that applies sustainable design principles to a design context, where possible using a live project.
Teaching includes Building Information Modelling (BIM) and work on a range of live projects in a design environment that simulates real workplace practices. Students build a portfolio using industry software and learn energy assessment methods including BREEAM, LEED and Passivhaus. A work experience placement option is available and forms the second year of study, with placement durations of 12 weeks, 24 weeks, or a full year.
