University of Liverpool, UK Offers Duncan Norman Research Scholarship for Postgraduate Students

The Duncan Norman Research Scholarship at the University of Liverpool was established following a donation from The Duncan Norman Charitable Trust in memory of Duncan Norman. The scholarship is awarded annually, and the University states that competition is very strong. It includes maintenance and research support, tuition fee payment, and additional allowances and equipment.

The scholarship is open to prospective full-time postgraduate research students regardless of nationality, tuition fee status, or subject area. The University sets conditions on the student category and place of study, including that prospective MRes, Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, currently registered University of Liverpool MPhil/PhD students, off-site students, and those based at XJTLU are not eligible for application.

The University expects candidates, where possible, to also apply for funding from alternate sources for a postgraduate studentship. If offered, the studentship must be accepted, and the Duncan Norman Research Scholarship would provide additional top up funding. The University’s Scholarship Awarding Committee considers candidates who hold (or are likely to attain) a first-class honours degree (or equivalent).

Holders must register for a PhD at the University of Liverpool and attend events based in Liverpool organised by The Duncan Norman Charitable Trust. Support includes annual maintenance with possible top-up to that level if other funding is received, full tuition fees, an accommodation allowance, a laptop or desktop computer up to a set value, and research-related support including conference expenses in specified years and Research Support Funding recorded in the academic offer letter.

• Holders must attend any events based in Liverpool organised by The Duncan Norman Charitable Trust.
• Eligible candidates must hold a formal offer of study for a PhD programme at the University of Liverpool.
• Only students who already hold, or are likely to attain in forthcoming examinations, a first-class honours degree (or its equivalent) are likely to be considered.
• Not eligible: prospective MRes.
• Not eligible: Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine.
• Not eligible: currently registered University of Liverpool MPhil/PhD students.
• Not eligible: off-site students.
• Not eligible: students based at XJTLU.

• Competitive annual maintenance stipend of £23,000 (or top-up to this level of maintenance if the candidate is in receipt of other funding).
• Full payment of tuition fees (Home, EU or Overseas).
• Accommodation allowance of £5,500 for use against the cost of either University or private accommodation.
• Laptop or desktop computer of up to £1,000 in value.
• Support for conference expenses of up to £500 per year in years 2 and 3.
• Research Support Funding (RSF) up to £1,250 per year (must be recorded in the academic offer letter).
