Kentucky State University offers an online Master of Arts in Special Education with Certification in Learning and Behavior Disorders (P-12). The program’s intent is to increase the supply of special education teachers by targeting qualified college graduates, including those whose degree is in fields other than education. Students complete required courses in special education, including legal and parental issues, reading and math instruction, behavior management, research, and instructional assessment.
The program uses interactive accelerated coursework delivered online, with each semester including two eight-week sessions through electronic modalities. Students complete a minimum of 200 hours of field experiences prior to the final clinical experience. All students except option 6 candidates complete a practicum/student teaching experience in an accredited public school classroom with students who have Individual Education Plans (IEPs) in Learning and Behavior Disorders (LBD). The program has three certification tracks: Option 6-Initial alternative certification, Initial traditional certification, and Advanced traditional certification.
