Tsinghua University China Schwarzman Scholars Program

Schwarzman Scholars are selected from an international pool of distinguished candidates. Prospective Scholars are expected to demonstrate academic excellence, exceptional results in their field, and outstanding leadership qualities. The admissions materials describe the programme’s purpose as deepening understanding between China and the rest of the world.

Schwarzman Scholars brings together a diverse cohort of young leaders from all regions and sectors of the world. Selection is based on applicants’ leadership abilities and qualities such as exemplary character and integrity, academic aptitude and intellectual ability, empathy and intercultural competency, open mindedness, and entrepreneurial spirit.

Applications are reviewed by a committee of business, government, and academic leaders from around the world. A select number of candidates are invited for interviews with an international panel of leaders from a variety of backgrounds, who use their leadership experience to identify a cohort whose paths to leadership will be enhanced by an introduction to China and its global role.

• Must have an undergraduate degree.
• Applicants currently enrolled in an undergraduate degree must be on track to successfully complete all degree requirements before August 1 of their Schwarzman Scholars enrollment year.
• No requirements for a specific field of undergraduate study; all fields are welcome, but applicants must articulate how participating in Schwarzman Scholars will help develop their leadership potential within their field.
• Must be at least 18 and not yet 29 years of age as of August 1 of their Schwarzman Scholars enrollment year.
• Must be proficient in the English language; all teaching is conducted in English.
• If the applicant’s native language is not English, official English proficiency test scores must be submitted with the application.
• The English proficiency requirement is waived if the applicant studied at an undergraduate institution where the primary language of instruction was English for at least two years of the applicant’s academic program.
• The English proficiency requirement is also waived for applicants who have studied in English for two or more years at a master’s degree level or higher.
• Acceptable English test options and minimum scores: TOEFL (minimum score 5 out of 6-point scale or 100 out of 120-point scale); IELTS (minimum score 7); Cambridge English: Advanced (C1) or Cambridge English: Proficiency (C2) (minimum score 185); Duolingo English Test (minimum score 130).
• Application form must be completed in English.

• Enrollment through Schwarzman Scholars at Tsinghua University.

1. Complete the online application and submit it electronically once all required questions are answered.
2. Complete the application form in English; you may access, save, and continue work as frequently as needed before submitting.
3. Prepare the required application materials, including resume/CV, two essays, official transcripts, three letters of recommendation, and a short video self-introduction.
4. Upload the required documents as part of the online application (scan and upload official transcripts for each degree-granting post-secondary education institution attended).
5. Submit the application electronically via the online application.
6. After submission, the application will be reviewed by the admissions committee; select candidates are invited for interviews.

• Resume or CV (maximum 2 pages).
• Two required essays: a Leadership Essay (750 words) and a Statement of Purpose (500 words).
• Transcript/Academic Records: scanned official transcripts for each degree-granting post-secondary education institution attended.
• 3 Letters of Recommendation.
• Video Introduction: short video self-introduction of no more than 1 minute.
