Introduction

Veterinary Anesthesia Refresher Certificate is a program taught at Douglas College, Canada. The program is offered in campus-based modes with full-time options.

The Douglas College Veterinary Anesthesia Refresher Certificate is designed for registered veterinary technologists (RVTs) and veterinarians (DVMs) to refresh and enhance knowledge of small animal anesthesia and analgesia. The program consists of four courses: VTAN 1000, VTAN 1100, VTAN 1200, and VTAN 1300. The objectives focus on foundational knowledge in anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and pathology, plus safe administration and monitoring of anesthetic and analgesic drugs and fluids.

The first three courses are delivered online in an asynchronous format, with ongoing access to a Douglas College instructor, an AVTAA-certified VTS, who provides guidance and answers questions. Participants also complete the RECOVER Basic and Advanced Life Support online certifications. The program culminates in VTAN 1300, a four-day in-person simulation-based wet lab at Douglas College, with practical experience using, maintaining, and troubleshooting anesthetic equipment, plus anesthesia and CPR simulation scenarios.
