Introduction

Angewandte Kultur- und Translationsstudien (deutsch-polnisch) is a Bachelor program taught at Universität Potsdam, Germany. Intake: Fall, Spring. The program is offered in campus-based modes with full-time (4 years) options.

Angewandte Kultur- und Translationsstudien (deutsch-polnisch) at Universität Potsdam is a one-subject Bachelor degree. Students study culture and translation studies with a focus on inter- and transcultural processes in German-Polish language and cultural contact, translation as cultural transfer, and media practice. The programme includes language and translation practice, including techniques of simultaneous interpreting and media interpreting, as well as audiovisual translation such as dubbing and film subtitles. Students can also try literary translation.

The degree includes exercises and seminars on translator techniques in areas such as tourism, museums, and memorial sites. Students complete short internships in Germany and Poland, and they gain key competences in tutorials and seminars. The programme runs across two universities: four semesters with Polish students (two semesters in Potsdam and two semesters in Lublin) and the sixth semester at the university where the studies began. Both universities award a double degree.

The programme aims to prepare students for a career in fields where translation work is important. After the degree, students can specialise as professional translators and interpreters across areas of intercultural communication, including tourism, memorial and museum education, cultural institutions, media, business, and politics.
