Physik

Physik is a Bachelor program taught at Universität Potsdam, Germany. Intake: Fall, Spring. The program is offered in campus-based modes with full-time (4 years) options.

Universität Potsdam offers the Ein-Fach-Bachelor Physik (Bachelor of Science). Students study experimental physics incl. labor exercises, theoretical physics, and mathematics. The degree also includes methods of physics, a combination of profile field and subject-specific key competencies, and Wahlpflichtmodules with an Ergänzungsfach. The program covers classical mechanics, electricity, magnetism, electrodynamics, ray and wave optics, quantum mechanics, structure of matter, thermodynamics, and atom, nuclear, and elementary particle physics.

The bachelor curriculum is modular and totals 180 Leistungspunkte. It includes experimental and theoretical work, with emphasis on experimental methods through Laborpraktika and on practical and theoretical knowledge in electronics and computer-assisted process control, data acquisition, data processing, and data analysis. In the fifth semester, students choose one specialization: Physik kondensierter Materie, Astrophysik, Nichtlineare Dynamik, Photonik und Quantenoptik einschl. Elementarteilchentheorie, or Klimaphysik. The degree ends with a Bachelorarbeit supervised by a professorship in the Institute for Physics and Astronomy or one of the cooperating research institutes.

Universität Potsdam states that graduates can take up professional work or continue with a forschungsorientierten Master of Science Physik or Astrophysics. The institution also lists fields such as scientific research at universities and research institutes, research and development departments in companies, and science communication in media and public outreach. It also mentions roles in bankwesen, management, administration, and politics.
