Introduction

Sociology major is a Bachelor program taught at Colgate University, USA. The program is offered in campus-based modes with full-time options.

The Sociology major at Colgate University focuses on the scientific study of how societies are organized and how they function. Students study social issues and problems, social stress and change in contemporary and historical societies, and topics such as social inequality, race/ethnicity, gender/sexuality, the media, immigration, social movements, globalization, crime/deviance, education, war, and environmental issues. Students also take courses on classical and contemporary sociological theory, research design, and qualitative and quantitative research methods.

The major consists of nine courses, with only one course allowed outside sociology. Students must complete required courses including SOCI 101, SOCI 201, and SOCI 250, with stated completion points and grade requirements. By the end of junior year, students complete one research-intensive course built around analysis of quantitative and/or qualitative sociological data. The curriculum culminates in the required senior seminar, which supports an independent research project on a topic of the student’s choice.

Sociology majors (and sociology minors) go on to careers in fields such as communications, marketing, business, management, education, law, medicine/public health, and the nonprofit sector. Students also have an honors option through an honors seminar and honors thesis workshop, which includes writing and defending an extended project proposal, presenting an academic poster, completing a thesis manuscript, and giving a final oral presentation.
