Introduction

Art History is a Bachelor program taught at Hampshire College, USA. The program is offered in campus-based modes with full-time options.

Art History at Hampshire College studies visual data in a historical context. Students concentrate in art history by analyzing works of art as objects or monuments and by interpreting them in relation to the historical circumstances, endeavors, and conflicts of the cultures and regions where they were made. The program also focuses on reading and interpreting visual art as records of imagination and societal concerns, using diverse critical methods and original thought.

Art history at Hampshire College is strongly interdisciplinary. Concentrations connect art history to curatorial studies, sociology, memory, spirituality, literature, and architecture. Students explore topics through courses such as The Body in Modern Art, along with work reflected in student project titles including The Triumph of Earthly Love in the Work of Caravaggio and The Peasant in Nazi and Soviet Visual Culture.

Learning uses museums and galleries available through the Five College Consortium, plus a partnership with Historic Deerfield, to provide access to art and material culture across geographic and historical contexts. On campus, students can also use the National Yiddish Book Center and the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art, and they can use multiple partner art museum collections, including the Mead Art Museum and the Smith College Museum of Art.
