Shielded Metal Arc Welding
Introduction
Shielded Metal Arc Welding is a program taught at Nicolet Area Technical College, USA. Intake: Fall, Spring. The program is offered in campus-based modes with full-time options.
The Shielded Metal Arc Welding Technical Certificate is for people who want the skills to be a successful welder in the shielded metal arc welding process. Students interpret prints and weld symbols, then perform welding using various metal types including carbon steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. They also perform thermal cutting during the program.
Learning includes thermal cutting, shielded metal arc welding on carbon steel, weld inspection and testing, and weld symbols. Weld quality is assessed per AWS D1.1 Structural Steel Code. Instruction includes etch tests, bend tests, and break tests, plus group activities exploring the process of procedure and welder qualification. The program uses competency-based education, with flexible pace and multiple start dates.
