Introduction

Media Arts & Culture is a Bachelor program taught at Occidental College, USA. Intake: Fall, Spring. The program is offered in campus-based modes with full-time (4 years) options.

Media Arts & Culture at Occidental College brings together film and media theory with hands-on production. Students study how visual and digital media shape culture, politics, and identity, with coursework that spans media history, theory, and production. They work across forms including fiction, documentary, experimental video, animation, television, social media, video games, video essays, participatory media, AR/VR, and digital and motion design.

Students can shape their studies around two areas of focus: Critical Media and Media Production. Critical Media includes film and media history, visual and digital culture, and emerging forms such as video essays and GIS-based projects. Media Production emphasizes hands-on production techniques across fiction, documentary, experimental, and interactive forms, integrating theory with creative practice.

The program includes internships and collaborative projects that connect creative practice to real-world experience in film, television, and digital industries. In the final year, students complete a senior comps project that brings together creative and critical work, which may include scholarly essays, short films, animations, video installations, screenplays, or interactive works.
