Introduction

Philosophy at Occidental College is an undergraduate major focused on how arguments work and how beliefs, ideas, and traditions shape culture, policy, and everyday life. Students study ethics, logic, mind, science, race, and global philosophical traditions, while building writing and reasoning skills. Course topics also include practical ethics and political philosophy, existentialist philosophy, Daoist texts, and questions about happiness, meaning, and the good life.
Learning is supported by close reading, lively debates, and faculty-mentored research through the Undergraduate Research Center, including participation in the Summer Research Program, independent projects, and presenting work. Students also take courses that combine philosophy with practice, such as Ethics Bowl team competition and Philosophy Through Baking, which pairs reflection with student-led baking projects. Funding is available through Richter grants and other campus funding for community-based research, international fieldwork, and independent inquiry.
