Introduction

Linguistics is a Bachelor program taught at Pitzer College, USA. Intake: Fall, Spring. The program is offered in campus-based modes with full-time (4 years) options.

The Linguistics major at Pitzer College is a Bachelor of Arts major in Linguistics and Cognitive Science. Students study the structures of language and how language shapes everyday life and social interactions. Course goals include using data to test a hypothesis and build arguments, examining language as a phenomenon in minds versus in society, and exploring how languages and dialects relate to social power dynamics. Students also gain in-depth knowledge in one subfield and conduct independent research on language.

The major is offered as a collaborative program with the Department of Linguistics and Cognitive Science at Pomona College, with coursework on both campuses. Students majoring in Linguistics must study three of the four core divisions: Phonetics/Phonology, Syntax, and Semantics and/or Sociolinguistics. They also take courses on language variation and a course that looks at one language in depth or compares several languages, plus at least three other Linguistics courses.

Students engage in research both in and out of the classroom, including documenting understudied and endangered languages and learning to analyze large sets of data. The curriculum also includes LGCS 190 PO – Senior Seminar.

Students who continue working on a thesis after the seminar can register for LGCS 191 PZ – Senior Thesis in the spring, or substitute another type of project if approved by the faculty adviser. Majors can also choose courses from Linguistics, Anthropology, Psychology, Spanish, and Music.
