Social Sciences, Bachelor of Social Sciences

The Bachelor of Social Sciences at the University of Eastern Finland introduces key concepts and methods in social sciences. The programme covers sociology and social and public policy, with topics including labour, education, care and multiculturalism.

It is a three-year degree of 180 ECTS credits. Students take required and optional courses, including basic and intermediate studies in social sciences, language and communication studies, general studies and minor subjects. Teaching and learning take place online in lectures, seminars and reading groups. Assessment includes learning journals, essays and exams. The bachelor’s thesis uses empirical data and a sociological or social and public policy research question.

The degree develops skills for work and includes courses that focus on career thinking and the expectations of social scientists. The University of Eastern Finland says the degree provides a grounding for a related master’s programme in Finland or abroad.
