Bachelor's Programme in Liberal Arts and Sciences, Bachelor and Master of Arts or Science or Social Sciences

The Bachelor's Programme in Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Helsinki combines disciplines across the natural sciences, social sciences, computing and the humanities. Students study how different disciplines produce knowledge and sample from them to build an interdisciplinary combination that suits their interests. The programme offers six specialisations: Data Science, Digital Humanities, Ecology and Adaptation, Economics of Natural Resources, Resource Management of Global Forests, and Social Data Science.

The degree is 180 ECTS and designed to take three years for the bachelor's part of the programme. Students complete a common core, disciplinary modules, language and communication studies, electives across the university, and a bachelor's thesis. The first year includes core courses, disciplinary modules and either another disciplinary module or Finnish language studies. Students choose a specialisation at the end of the first year. The second year includes further disciplinary modules, interdisciplinary orientation and practice, work-life orientation, language and communication studies, and other university courses. The third year includes final modules for the study track, an applied interdisciplinary project course, and a thesis seminar and bachelor's thesis.

The programme is hosted by the Faculty of Humanities and brings together teaching and research from six faculties. Teaching takes place on the City Centre, Kumpula and Viikki campuses. The University of Helsinki says the English-language degree opens pathways to many master's programmes and to careers that reward bridging fields.

Admission is based on a suitable test, such as SAT, ACT, IB or the Finnish matriculation examination, with equal weight on reading, writing and mathematical skills.
