The Doctoral Programme in the Humanities brings together the humanities research areas represented at the University of Helsinki. It covers language and linguistic interaction, cultural and social phenomena, historical change, values and knowledge, art and artistic expression, literary fiction and non-fiction, and gender and sexuality.
The programme develops theoretical and methodological skills for analysing cultural, historical, linguistic, literary and philosophical phenomena. Independent research is central. The degree includes doctoral thesis work, discipline-specific studies, general transferable skills, and a compulsory research seminar and research ethics course.
The programme is targeted at doctoral researchers who want to understand the human condition and work across disciplinary boundaries. Graduates are qualified for demanding research and specialist roles, and for expert and leadership positions in cultural institutions, government ministries, public administration, the third sector, businesses, education, politics and media.
