Aquatic Sciences, Master of Science

Akatic Sciences at the University of Jyväskylä is a Master of Science programme in environment. It covers freshwater systems, including lakes, rivers and wetlands, the organisms that live in them, and the ways the surrounding environment and society affect how they function.

The programme addresses biological and physical-chemical phenomena and concepts related to water and aquatic nature. It also covers human impacts on aquatic ecosystems and the ecosystem services aquatic nature provides. The University of Jyväskylä says the setting supports field work in natural environments alongside laboratory and theoretical study. The aquatic science major focuses on environmental and biological processes that shape inland waters and on the ecologically, economically and socially sustainable use of natural resources.

The degree takes two years and is taught through contact teaching. The master’s thesis takes about five months and includes planning and carrying out a project, writing the thesis, and work based on scientific literature, experimental or theoretical work, and discussion. Thesis work is often done in research groups, and research projects with co-operative parties and business are also possible.
