The major in Acoustics and Audio Technology gives students a foundation in human hearing, audio perception, audio signal processing, and the physics of sound. It covers technical psychoacoustics and topics such as communication acoustics, acoustical measurements, room and building acoustics, audio signal processing, virtual acoustics, electroacoustics, speech processing, and audio programming.
The programme is 120 ECTS credits and takes two years of contact teaching in English. Most major courses are studied in the first year, except for the project course, which is scheduled in the second year. Students then choose optional courses and can specialise in areas such as audio processing, building acoustics, noise control, or speech technology. The spring term of the second year is reserved for the Master’s thesis.
Aalto University describes the programme as strongly research-based. Teaching includes practical experiments, exercises, practical assignments, prototype building, and learning diaries. Students have access to acoustic laboratories, and the programme has links with the audio industry. The degree gives eligibility for scientific postgraduate studies in Finland.
