Animation, Master of Arts (Art and Design)

Aalto University’s Master of Arts in Animation combines hands-on artistry with foundational theory. The programme covers storytelling, visualisation, pre-production, directing, character design and character animation, using 2D and 3D animation techniques from CGI to cartoon and stop frame.

The two-year programme is organised into advanced major studies, elective studies and a master’s thesis. In the first year, students build core animation skills. In the second year, they work towards a specialist area and their thesis, and they learn about entrepreneurial opportunities while developing their artistic identity.

Aalto University says the programme is guided by industry professionals and has close ties with Finnish animation studios, production companies, festivals and other institutions. Students can focus on directing, screenwriting, pre-production or design.
