Comparative Social Policy and Welfare (COSOPO) is a specialisation within the Master’s Programme in Social Science Research. It examines social policy and welfare in global, national and local contexts, with a focus on European societies and different welfare models. Students study comparative designs and qualitative and quantitative policy analysis, and may choose elective study units on well-being and welfare production in a globalising world.
The programme is jointly organised by Tampere University and Johannes Kepler University Linz. Studies are primarily online and combine contact teaching with online learning. Once each semester there is a joint intensive period of 1–2 weeks, which is compulsory. The degree comprises core study blocks in conceptual approaches, national systems, research methodology, academic writing, electives, an internship, and a master’s thesis. Students may gain work experience as a trainee or through voluntary work for three months.
The programme aims to enhance students’ credentials for roles as analysts and applied researchers in national, European and international organisations.
