Master's Degree Programme in East Asian Studies, Master of Social Sciences

The Master’s Degree Programme in East Asian Studies at the University of Turku is taught by the Centre for East Asian Studies. It covers contemporary East Asia, with focus on China, Japan, South Korea and North Korea. Students study contemporary history, current social and political phenomena, debates and competing perspectives, and East Asian languages to support work with language material and sources.

The programme is delivered through lectures, seminars, workshops, intensive courses and supervised self-study courses. It includes compulsory and optional subject courses, language studies, methods courses, research seminars and a Master’s thesis. The thesis is supported by an academic supervisor and research seminars.

The programme prepares students for international public, private and third sector professions. It also qualifies graduates to apply to PhD programmes and pursue an academic career.
