ICTP & University of Trieste Med Physics Scholarships

The Master of Advanced Studies in Medical Physics and Radiation Metrology (MMP) is a two-year advanced training programme run jointly by ICTP and the University of Trieste. ICTP describes the programme as providing young, promising graduates of physics or related fields (mainly from developing countries) with postgraduate theoretical and clinical training so candidates may be recognised as clinical medical physicists in their home countries. The Radiation Metrology track prepares candidates to work as Radiation Metrologists in Secondary Standards Dosimetry Laboratories (SSDL).

The programme includes a year of basic and advanced courses taught in English, followed by a year of professional clinical training in a medical physics department of an Italian hospital in the programme’s training network. For the Radiation Metrology track, the practical training is in Secondary Standards Dosimetry Laboratories (SSDL). The programme is co-sponsored by IAEA and supported by IOMP, EFOMP, AIFM, and in collaboration with Trieste university hospital.

Selection is based on university performance, research activity and professional experience, and on letters of recommendation. The selection committee is made of Members of the Master’s Committee, and each application is considered individually. Other factors such as nationality and gender are also taken into consideration. Pre-selected applicants may be asked to provide documentation that their curriculum studiorum is equivalent to the Italian “Laurea specialistica”, and may be asked to join a virtual interview.

Entitlements describe that qualified candidates may attend at their own cost. A limited number of full or partial scholarships are awarded to successful candidates from developing countries, supported by IAEA and ICTP. Full support includes travel, university fees and a monthly stipend. Partial support can be half support (travel, university fees and a partial monthly stipend) or support limited to travel and registration fees. The master degree is awarded by the University of Trieste only to candidates who successfully complete required examinations, clinical/practical training, project defence and other requirements as decided by the Master’s Committee, and participants are required to take part in ongoing activities of ICTP in related fields.

1. Complete the online application form for the Master of Advanced Studies in Medical Physics and Radiation Metrology.
2. Submit a CV.
3. Submit a transcription of the university degree.
4. Optionally submit a letter of recommendation from senior scientists familiar with the applicant (recommendations should indicate whether the scientist has contacts at ICTP).
5. Submit the application for selection based on the selection committee criteria; pre-selected applicants may be asked to submit documentation equivalence to the Italian “Laurea specialistica” and may be asked to join a virtual interview.
6. If pre-selected applicants come from countries having an active IAEA TC project, submit the nomination to IAEA through established official channels using the IAEA nomination form.
