The Master of Arts in Music focuses on musicology with approaches such as historical and ethnomusicological investigation, hermeneutics, semiotics, and criticism. Students study methods, philosophies, and techniques for historical and ethnomusicological research. The program promotes familiarity with current musicological research through independent study and faculty consultation. It encourages participation in regional, national, and international musicological communities. The course aims to develop skills for specialization, broaden understanding of music performance and research, and enhance awareness of the working context through continued study and research. The program is delivered over four semesters with classes typically held in the afternoons, including courses on research methodology, musical thought, languages, aesthetics, and a supervised dissertation.
Applicants normally hold a bachelor degree in music or an equivalent qualification. They must submit an extended piece of writing on a musical subject to demonstrate writing skills and intellectual ability at master's level.
An English test is required except for students majoring in Arabic music.
