The Lex:lead Group is offering up to 10 one-time law scholarships of US$500 in February 2016. Qualified students (citizens of a least developed country and enrolled in a law program in an eligible least developed country) are invited to register. These scholarships are available to students submitting winning essays by 31 December 2015 answering: How does poor economic development contribute to health-related concerns; how can law control these concerns and improve lives? The registration deadline is 31 October 2015.

This is for both citizenship and educational enrolment.
What does it cover: A panel of international judges will assess the essays with one-time awards of US$500. That award cheques are made out to the applicant’s educational institution for use toward the student’s tuition and/or books less any applicable bank conversion fees and/or taxes.
Selection Criteria: Judges are given guidelines that suggest that
- an excellent essay (well-articulated with a clear understanding of the problem posed and offering an insightful solution) may be awarded between 90-100 out of 100 points;
- a good essay with some of the elements but lacking others be given between 80- 89/100 points;
- an average essay that competently addresses the issue but has significant weaknesses, e.g. in the solution posed, be awarded between 70-79/100; and
- weaker essays that inadequately address the question be awarded fewer points (e.g. between 60-69/100 for essays of limited merit; between 50-59/100 for essays that are significantly flawed with basic issues analysing the problem posed; and below 50/100 for essays that are fundamentally deficient in providing a sufficient response). Notwithstanding the guidelines given, the judges’ assessments are dispositive even if they do not follow these criteria and finalists determined on the basis of the judges’ views.
Notification: Essays submitted by the deadline will be independently assessed by judges from a panel of experts and awards announced in February 2016.
Application Procedure: Applicants must register by 31 October 2015 to email contact-at-lex-lead.org providing proof of citizenship in an Eligible Country and proof of enrolment in a law program in an Eligible Country. Application forms are available at Lex:lead Group website or can be requested via email. Applicants meeting eligibility criteria are assigned a registration number which must be used (with no other identifying information) in submitting essays by 31 December 2015. No extensions will be possible so please plan ahead; in addition, no essays can be accepted before 1 December 2015.
